STATE BASICS: Massachusetts is traditionally deep blue territory as far as politics go. Scott Brown was able to buck the trend in a special election and is now poised for a solid finish in his re-election bid in 2012. Mitt Romney could possibly sell the GOP brand if he becomes the nominee, but the state is most likely to be safe for Barack Obama.
